Each year the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers awards a scholarship for use at an accredited college within the boundaries of the original Minnesota Territory.
To be eligible, an applicant must be in 12th grade or above; show proof of acceptance by an accredited junior or academic college or university located within the original boundaries of the Minnesota Territory, as designated by the U.S. Congress; Membership in MTP is not required; Upon receiving proof of the recipient’s successful completion of the first term, the $500 scholarship will be paid directly to the college for application to the second term’s expenses.
The first scholarship was awarded in May, 2009. Immediate family members of MTP Board Members are not eligible.
2017 Essay Topic: Choose a Minnesota territorial settler you admire and explain why.
Essay Length & Format: A minimum of 750 words but no more than 2000, not including the bibliography. The essay must be submitted using Microsoft Word or PDF in Times New Roman, Tahoma or Calibri font, size 12 and double-spaced with 1” margins in the MLA format. Answers.com and Wikipedia are not acceptable bibliography resources. Primary sources are encouraged but not required.
Deadlines and Information: All essays and application materials must be submitted by midnight CST on March 3, 2017. The scholarship recipient will be notified after April 16, 2017. Essays will be judged for historical accuracy, interest and content. Judges are members of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers, Inc. The winning essay may be published by the Minnesota Territorial Pioneers, Inc. and announced at our Annual Membership Meeting on May 6, 2017.
